Stapleton sits on the former site of Denver's Stapleton Airport, which was closed in 1995. A private group of Denver civic leaders, the Stapleton Development Foundation, convened in 1990 and produced a community vision for the 7.5-square-mile site in 1995, emphasizing a pedestrian-oriented design rather than the automobile-oriented designs found in many other planned developments. Nearly one-third of the 4,700-acre site is slated for redevelopment as public parks and open space. Additionally, a very real focus was called for concerning sustainability, the environment and education. The former airport site is now being redeveloped by Forest City Enterprises as one of the largest urban master planned communities in the United States. Construction began in 2001, and today more than 3,000 homes and two million square feet of retail and office have been built on the Stapleton site. At final build out in 2025, Stapleton is expected to be home to at least 30,000 residents in 12,000 homes and more than 13 million square feet of commercial space. Join representatives from Forest City Enterprises as they share their experience in developing this extraordinary community that has become a national model for Smart Growth in the 21st century.
