To meet competency demands of the modern world, students need to have social literacy and literacy in all subjects involving speaking, reading, listening, and critical thinking. Cooperative Literacy provides teachers the opportunity to attend to students' social and emotional growth as they work through content, focusing on socialization through collaboration. Independent and whole-group instruction are still viable in this teaching system, which organizes students into mutually interdependent learning teams to create the classroom community.
