Session #: 788-204
Presenter(s): Edward Tick Session Length: 1 hr. 30 min. Event: 2008 Conference Date: December 8-14, 2008
War's violence is so severe that it can cause the true self to become distorted or lost for life. One-third of the returnees from Iraq and Afghanistan are already diagnosed with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with its myriad of disabling symptoms. We'll explore the inner world of combat and the universal dimensions of veterans' wounding through world history, mythology, archetypal psychology, cross-cultural perspectives and the testimonies of survivors. By examining PTSD as an identity disorder and soul wound, we'll lay out the interventions to rebuild identities, shrink trauma, and restore wounded dimensions of soul in our veterans. We'll also explore how to create veteran-sensitive communities that restore the proper relationship between a society and its warriors, respond to the needs of our returnees and address PTSD in the home setting.
