Session #: 788-308
Presenter(s): Madeleine Van Hecke Session Length: 1 hr. 30 min. Event: 2008 Conference Date: December 8-14, 2008
In 1933, philosopher John Dewey suggested that we need to be open-minded, "hospitable" to new ideas and different perspectives. How do we stay open-minded and still reflective and judicious? In this session, we'll look at the reasons that we often stop at what creativity expert Roger von Oech calls "the first right answer" and fail to explore alternative possibilities. We'll learn why we often reject unusual ideas while they're still ringing the doorbell, before they've even fully crossed the threshold of our minds. Most importantly, we'll discuss how to calm the fears that make us hold so tight to the first right answer and how to apply specific strategies to expand our own creative open-mindedness.
