Session #: 788-042
Presenter(s): Maggie Phillips Session Length: 6 hr. 00 min. Event: 2008 Conference Date: December 8-14, 2008
Trauma can create an internal straitjacket that restricts the growth of heart, mind, body, and spirit and generates devastating emotional and physical pain. This presentation will review the major mechanisms of pain, especially the role of trauma as a "root cause" of persistent and chronic pain. Other topics include the pain dynamics of the central nervous system and the polyvagal system, the common pathways of emotional and physical pain, the role of brain chemistry, and distinctions between pain and suffering.
Specific techniques will be demonstrated and practiced which can help to rebalance the nervous system, transform perceptions and experiences of pain, provide rapid pain relief, activate the parasympathetic restoration cycle, and teach self-regulation. Additional tools to promote site-specific healing, build effective self-treatment protocols, and resolve common barriers to the resolution of chronic pain will also be presented as time permits. Opportunity for clinical case discussion and consultation will also be provided.
