This session's participants will explore reading and writing challenges plaguing African American males, as well as innovative strategies to combat these challenges. The session will feature examination of student self-image and efficacy, culturally relevant teaching of resiliency novels, and discussion of the connection between academic language and high academic achievement. The presenters will demonstrate hands-on reading, comprehension, writing, and vocabulary strategies. They will also discuss literacy strategies that immediately affect reading and writing achievement for African American males in crisis.
