In order to treat diseases of the spirit (depression, anxiety disorders, addictions, and escalating violence), we must establish some connection to patients at a soulful level. Our success in healing diseases of the human spirit depends on finding a way to touch someone's heart. Patients have to believe in the practitioner as well as their practice (diagnosis and treatment), if they are going to make the necessary changes to become the principal agents in their own healing. Using the language of psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), myths, stories, rituals and ceremonies, explore the many ways to touch patients' hearts and inspire them into believing they can create new endings to their old stories.
