Naturopathic management of the abnormal Pap smear
Marianne Marchese, ND
The purpose of this talk is to provide clear guidelines for treating various degrees of abnormality on a Pap smear and cervical biopsy with natural medicine. I will review the current Bethesda System for the management of the abnormal Pap smear, referring patients for colposcopy, adjunctive test such as hybrid capture human papillomavirus (HPV) testing, and interpretation of cervical biopsy results. Next, I will provide guidelines for treating various levels of abnormalities using vaginal herbal suppositories, oral therapies and cervical escharotic treatment. I will discuss in detail how to perform the escharotic treatment in-office, and will present case studies of numerous patients I have treated showing successful outcomes. This talk is for anyone who is proficient in this area but wants and update on current guidelines, who isnt sure what to do after getting back an abnormal pap smear, who is in the habit of referring to the OB/GYN for Cryotherapy or LEEP, who isnt sure when to use vaginal suppositories versus escharotic, who forgot how to do the escharotic treatment, or anyone else for that matter.
